Hawaiian drivers show high records of distracted driving.

A survey published by Forbes Advisor ranked Hawaiian drivers as some of the worst in the United States. The report explained that drivers in the state, on average, exhibit the worst behaviors whilst driving. The survey focused on 5,000 drivers around the country, with 100 from each state. In a few of the different categories used to create the ranking of drivers by state, Hawaii ranked highest.

Specifically, the Hawaiian drivers showed the worst records for three categories.

The first category related has to do with changing lanes and making turns. Hawaiians showed that they have a high number of drivers who do these actions without signaling they will do so via their turn signals. Secondly, Hawaiians had a high record of drivers driving above posted speed limits by 20 miles per hour or more. Lastly, there is a large number of incidents in which drivers run red lights.

They additionally showed bad reports regarding behavior when behind the wheel. They had many instances in which drivers were reported to be texting while driving or driving under the influence. Coming in at the top for three categories and ranking high in others led to the Aloha State being considered the state with the worst drivers, according to the Forbes Advisor survey at least.

Following behind Hawaii were Oregon, New Mexico, and Wyoming.

Also in the top worst driver states were Alaska, North Dakota, Connecticut, Vermont, Kansas, and West Virginia. Rivaling these states and coming in at the top of having the best drivers was Mississippi. They were reported to have well behaved drivers.

Forbes Advisor conducts this survey in order to provide consumer advice on various parts of life. For example, they use these findings to provide assistance on insurance, banking, and other financial services and products.

Locals in the state of Hawaii acknowledged the rise of some of the bad driving behaviors.

Specifically, locals stated that they are also concerned about the amount of distracted driving that is happening on the road. One resident of Kakaako spoke with news affiliates calling the number of bad drivers in Hawaii “outrageous.” She described drivers as “going crazy” when they get impatient in Hawaiian traffic. However, she and many others believe that it may not actually be locals who are at fault in these scenarios. Instead, she points out that there is a correspondence to the increase in transplants from other states and the increase in bad drivers in Hawaii. Furthermore, even if the transplants are not responsible, there has been a huge uptick in Hawaiian tourism, which also worsens the driving conditions.
