Are you only now left with more questions? No worries, we are here to help!

What is RORO transport?

This is a great question! So, as you know, RORO stands for Roll On/Roll Off. This is a term describing a specific type of shipping method and the vessel used for it. RORO ships are designed to carry wheeled cargo, such as cars, trucks, semi-trailer trucks, trailers, and even railroad cars. Unlike other shipping methods, RORO involves driving the vehicles directly onto and off the ship using the vehicle’s own wheels. So basically, one of our shippers would drive your car from the port base up a ramp and onto the ship. From there, the ship travels to its next destination and makes pick-ups and deliveries along the way!

How does RORO differ from other methods?

RORO is a very unique shipping style, but it is not the only one for oversea shipments. In addition to RORO, the other leading shipping method is LOLO, aka Lift On/Lift Off. In this shipping style, vehicles and any cargo is lifted via crane from the port base and lowered onto the ship. To drop off the cargo, the opposite is done. This shipping style is ideal in some cases, for example when the cargo has no wheels. However, when wheels are involved, the best choice for shipping is the RORO method.

When did RORO start?

RORO shipping actually started back in the 19th century. At the time, it was used to ship trains across the globe in order to establish railways in different places. Since, the transportation industry has grown the benefits of RORO and now we prefer this shipping method for shipping any wheeled vehicle across any body of water!
